Miami (May 27, 2020) – State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announces that as a continued result of the effective partnership effort by the State Attorney and the prosecutors of the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, the Miami-Dade Public Defender Carlos Martinez, the Administrative Judge of the Criminal Courts for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Nushin Sayfie and Daniel Junior, Director
of Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR), the fourth phased release of additional individuals who are serving their jail sentence in MDCR will occur. The releases are the result of an Agreed Order to Terminate Jail Sentences Early Because of the Coronavirus Disease signed May 27, 2020.
“The work of all our Miami-Dade criminal justice partners to reduce the number of people held in our local jails continues while we also work to balance such actions with the need to keep our community safe from crime and violence,” said State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. “Our community-wide battle against the COVID-19 virus requires well-considered steps to reduce the chances of infection for jail inmates, correctional officers and correctional staff. Our joint review of the status of sentenced inmates and nonviolent pretrial detainees suitable to be released will continue as we deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.”
